Base Camp

The OWA Base Camp or Bison Peak Lodge is located about 80 miles southwest of Denver in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. The facility rests at the base of Bison Peak in the Tarryall Mountains, at an elevation of 9000 feet and is surrounded by thousands of acres of the Pike National Forest. The Lost Creek Wilderness and the Tarryall River are only a short walk away and provide countless possibilities for rock climbing, backpacking, fly fishing, mountaineering, mountain biking, and other adventure-sports. Base Camp is truly located in "adventure heaven"!  Check out the facility web site at bisonpeaklodge.com for all the details.

Directions: From Denver- Take Hwy 285 west over Kenosha Pass and into South Park and the small town of Jefferson.  Turn south (left) in Jefferson on Park County Road 77 and proceed 23 miles (go 4 miles past Tarryall Reservoir) and look for the Base Camp sign on your right.

From Colorado Springs- Take Hwy 24 west to Lake George.  Turn right (north) on Park County Road 77 about 1/2 mile past Lake George.  Proceed 21 miles (8 miles past the old town of Tarryall) and look for the Base Camp sign on your left.

Base Camp and the Bison Peak Lodge is typically open from April 1 through Oct 15 and periodically at other times.

Facilities
The main structure at Base Camp is the new Bison Peak Lodge just completed in June '99. Constructed of masonry and locally harvested beetle kill timber, the building is the focal point for OWA activities. The 4000 square foot all season building features 7 bed/bunkrooms, 5 baths, mens shower house, commercial kitchen, dining room, abundant decks to soak in the magnificent view of the Tarryalls and the OWA office.

An additional 36 bunks are available in the nearby Bunkhouse and 4 person yurts. The Upper Meadow Campsite is only a quarter mile above the Lodge and features yurts/w bunks for 16, a remote kitchen area and large meeting yurt. The Upper Meadow has a fantastic view of the entire Tarryall range and is accessible by vehicle while remaining quiet and remote. Other Base Camp buildings include the OWA Trading Post and Equipment Building with a full bike and equipment repair shop.

Hearty meals are typically served in the lodge dining room or out on the decks. The lodge is completely heated for winter programs.  Transportation is typically available to and from the Colorado Springs airport (located 75 minutes away).

Activities

The whole realm of adventure activities are available either at Base Camp or within a short drive.  The backcountry is literally right outside the Bison Peak Lodge door including the Lost Creek Wilderness and roadless areas of the Puma Hills-- each of which offer great backpacking for trips of 1 day to a week.  Alpine climbing and backcountry mountaineering are 30 miles away in the Park Range.  Rock climbing including sport, trad and multi-pitch areas include Feral Petunia, Cross Hill, Eleven Mile Canyon and Cro-Magnon Dome and all are either adjacent to Base Camp or within 30 miles.

Fly fishing is available on site at the Base Camp pond or on the Tarryall River which is within walking distance.  Some 3 plus miles of private river is available to OWA groups providing exceptional fishing for Browns, Rainbows and Northern Pike.  Mountain biking takes place on a fine mix of single and double track with rides originating right on Base Camp's own trail system and reaching out to include parts of the Colorado Trail and an almost limitless expanse of forest jeep roads extending throughout the Tarryall Mountains, Puma Hills and South Park.  Finally, whitewater sports including rafting and kayaking are available through outside contractors on the Arkansas River-- a 60 mile drive to the west.

OWA can provide all technical gear for all of these activities as well as professional guiding and instruction.  Base Camp truly is a prime spot for facilitating adventure programs or trips of all kinds. The facility and programming are available for use by outside groups for retreats or simply as a base camp facility throughout the year. Groups of 6-60 can be accommodated depending on specific needs and time of the year.
