Heart Lake Backpack
Our favorite Yellowstone trip, the Heart Lake backpack is four days and allows us to explore Yellowstone’s biggest backcountry lake and some of it’s finest trout waters! The shore of Heart Lake provides gorgeous views from our camp and even has it’s own geyser.
On this trip we summit the great Mt. Sheridan, with stunning views of all the major landmarks around Yellowstone, including the incredible Tetons.
All this, just a short driving distance from our starting point of Jackson, WY makes this a fantastic option for those on a time budget.
Day 1- 8.5 mi
Transport to Heart Lake Trailhead from Jackson, WY
We start the backpack from Heart Lake trailhead and witness evidence of the 1988 Yellowstone fires and the role it played in this ecosystem’s development. We hike along Witch creek until we come upon Heart Lake, where the largest trout in Yellowstone was caught—a 43 lb lake trout!
Day 2- 7mi
Today is our optional day hike/summit of Mt Sheridan. With light daypacks on, we tag this 10,308 ft peak and take in the 360-degree panoramic view of the park and surrounding area.
Day 3- 9.5 mi
We’ll take off hiking beneath Mt Sheridan, and hopefully see some beautiful wildflowers along the way!
Eventually we make it to our camp at the Snake River. There are thermal hot springs that flow into the river, where we can soak and recuperate from the day’s hike.
Day 4- 5.5 mi
Transport to Jackson, WY
On the last day, we hike out to the Southern Entrance to the park, just a short drive from Jackson, WY.
